Our Practice in Lower Manhattan
At Serenity Natural Health we hope to create a safe, inviting, peaceful sanctuary from the busy streets of Manhattan.
Unlike other acupuncture practices, we only see one patient at a time, giving our full undivided attention to our patients.
Dr. Serena Ma
Dr. Serena Ma founded Serenity Natural Health in 2007. She considers herself a general practitioner, offering personal insights to issues such as stress, dermatology, gynecology, asthma/allergies, and pregnancy. She enjoys working with all her patients but is especially inspired by her cancer patients. She currently geeks out to the microbiome and probably talks about that with all of her patients.
Dr. Serena Ma loves her student-teacher roles. She attended Bastyr University, graduating with her Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine (ND) and Master of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MSAOM) and received special training in oncology and dermatology. Before medical school, Dr. Serena attended Boston University and graduated pre-med with honors from Sargent College with a degree in Human Physiology. After college, she learned about Sleep Medicine and what effects the circadian rhythm, as a research assistant at the Brigham & Women's Hospital in Boston. She finds the human body and how it functions extraordinary, eagerly studying it for most of her life. Dr. Serena is a former professor of Biochemistry at Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. Nowadays in practice, she appreciates her doctor as teacher job by enthusiastically educating her patients about their health. She finds that she learns just as much from her patients.
Dr. Serena is a licensed naturopathic physician in the state of Vermont and holds an acupuncture license in the state of New York. She is a professional member of the New York Association of Naturopathic Physicians (NYANP).
She lives in Brooklyn with her partner and son. Although she adores New York City, she also loves to spend time outdoors in nature and has even taught her toddler to hug trees.
Dr. Serena currently sees patients weekdays afternoon and evenings, except Tuesdays (her day off). She is also in on Sundays.
Dr. Christine Hwang
Dr. Christine Hwang has training as a primary care provider and is especially passionate about helping treat women’s health, fertility, and gastrointestinal issues. She has experience working with a wide range of health concerns including: rheumatologic and autoimmune disorders, endocrine imbalances, dermatological issues, stress, and sleep difficulties.
Dr. Christine received her Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine (ND), Master of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MSAOM) from Bastyr University in Seattle, and completed the Postbaccalaureate Prehealth Program at Rutgers University.
Dr. Christine has advanced training in naturopathic therapies for women's health and gynecology from Bastyr University and has completed one of the most comprehensive courses offered in the country to treat female and male infertility using Chinese medicine from the Jade Institute in Seattle.
Prior to starting medical school, Dr. Christine received her BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design. In the years that followed, family members began to experience health difficulties - this re-ignited her childhood interest in medicine. She now incorporates her training in art with her patient care by coming up with novel, highly individualized solutions for both simple and complex cases.
Dr. Christine is licensed to practice acupuncture in New York State and holds a license as a naturopathic physician in Washington State. She is an active professional member of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP) and the New York Association of Naturopathic Physicians (NYANP).
She lives in Brooklyn with her husband.
Dr. Christine sees patients Tuesday through Friday mornings and early afternoons. She is also in on Saturdays.
