Herbal Medicine

Herbal Medicine is plant medicine - the use of plant substances to treat or prevent disease. I am trained in both Western and Chinese herbal medicines and match the herbs to what is most appropriate for my patients.

Western vs. Eastern Herbalism

Western herbalism may include a single herb or a small combination of herbs.  They are often prescribed for a particular symptom or a set of symptoms.

Chinese herbalism is different in that it focuses on restoring a balance of energy, body, and spirit to maintain health rather than on treating a particular disease or medical condition. Herbs (formulas) are chosen with the goal of restoring balance based on the Chinese Medicine pattern the patient presents with.

Herbal formulations in general may consist of several different ingredients taken in the form of teas, powders, pills, tinctures, or syrups.  Chinese herbal formulas can be individually constructed according to the patient’s presentation and are modified as symptoms change.  I use Kamwo Herbal Pharmacy for my customized Chinese herbal formulations.
